Jewish Population Study of Greater Baltimore, 1985

Sponsor(s): The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore

Principal Investigator(s): Gary A Tobin

Study Dates: March 15-August 15, 1985

Population Estimates: Report estimates that approximately 87,000 Jewish persons live in 36,000 Jewish Households in the Baltimore area. An additional 4,700 non-Jewish persons are related to a Jewish HH member, for a "Jewish population" estimate of 91,700 people. An additional
Sample: Adult Jewish Households in the Greater Baltimore Area

Sample Size: 1175 Jewish household interviews

Sample Notes: Methodological Details in Section 1 of the "Main Report."

The data were gathered from 1,175 individuals in households with one or more Jewish individuals via a telephone interview survey. The sampling universe included Jewish households located in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County (with some additional interviews in Anne Arundel County). The sampling procedure was a stratified random sample of the geographic area by telephone exchange. For each geographic area, a random digit dialing strategy was used to obtain the sample. Data were weighted to compensate for geographic oversampling in some areas.

There are two data files in the North American Jewish Data Bank files: (1) a Household Data File, and (2) an Individual-Household Member data file.

Use of the Household Data file is strongly recommended. Data can be weighted using "WT;" projected precise HH number is 36,018 Jewish households. Total number of cases is 1,175.

Individual HH member data file has total of 3,046 household members, but no weighting variable is included. This file was revised from original by Ron Miller in 1996, since the original appeared to only include household members other than the respondent. Data Bank recommends using Multiple Response in SPSS with the Household Data File for household member characteristics, using "WT" for weighting.
