The 1999 Jewish Community Study of Rochester

Sponsor(s): Jewish Community Federation of Greater Rochester

Principal Investigator(s): Ira M. Sheskin

Study Dates: October, 1999

Sample: Adult Jewish Households in Monroe County

Sample Size: 708

Sample Notes: The data were gathered from 708 individuals in households with one or more Jewish individuals via a telephone interview survey. The sampling universe included Jewish households located in Monroe County, NY (Greater Rochester). It is estimated in the published report that there are 20,847 Jews in Monroe County. The sampling procedure included two different sampling frames: random digit dialing (RDD) and households with a distinctive Jewish name (DJN) listed in the Rochester telephone directory. In all, 213 cases came from the RDD frame, 495 from the DJN frame. It is reported in the introduction that 87% of potential respondents to the RDD frame agreed to be interviewed. The two sub-samples (RDD and DJN) were found to differ significantly on two variables: age of the household head and intermarriage. The data are weighted to correct for these differences.
