Sponsor(s): United Jewish Federation, Incorporated of Norfolk and Virginia Beach

Principal Investigator(s): Ira M. Sheskin

Study Dates: Report is a 1999 Jewish community center feasibility assessment, focusing on a proposed Thompkins Lane building site.

Population Estimates: No estimate of the number of Jewish persons.

19,000 people (including non-Jews) live in about 8,700 Jewish households in Tidewater.

Population estimate is based on a DJN (distinctive Jewish name) analysis from local telephone directories.

Study Notes: Study methodology analyzed Distinctive Jewish Names (DJNs) in local telephone directories to to update the size and geographic distribution of the Jewish population of Tidewater.

No interviews were conducted to corroborate whether a household included a Jewish adult.

Table 9 on page 41 of the Report gives the list of 31 names used for the analysis - as well as numerical counts in 1980, 1988, 1993 and 1999 used as the basis of population projections.

"In 1988, a major demographic study using Random Digit Dialing was completed which estimated 18,850 persons [all people including non-Jews] in Jewish households in Tidewater. A ratio was developed between the DJN count in the 1988 telephone directory and the estimated number of households in 1988. To develop and estimate of the current Jewish population, it is assumed that that same ratio applies in 1972 [earlier study], 1993, and 1999."

Report also utilized data from earlier Jewish population studies for the Tidewater area, and other planning-feasibility reports which had been completed previously.
